"The Gun, The Dog and the Thermos:
Culture and Hunting in Sweden and the United States"
by Dr. Thomas A. Heberlein
Is hunting with dogs effecient or unethical? Is the hunt a social event or an individual challenge? Thomas A. Heberlein, a professor of rural sociolology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, asks these questions as he compared the while-tailed deer hunt in Wisconsin with the moose hunt of Sweden. Even among avid hunters, cultural differences play an important role in how people view and pursue hunting in the two countries. (MORE .. see NOTE)
About: Dr. Thomas Heberlein ...
Tom Heberlein grew up in Portage Wisconsin where his interest in hunting was fostered by listening to stories told by customers at his father's gas station.
He received a BA from the University of Chicago, and a MA and Ph. D. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin. He was an assistant professor at the University of Colorado for one year and was a Professor at UW Madison in the Department of Rural Sociology from 1972 until 2001 when he retired. He is now a Professor Emeritus at UW Madison and holds an appointment as Professor in the Department of Animal Ecology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences at Umeå.
In 1976 he began studying hunter attitudes and policy preferences for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. This work led to inquiries into more basic issues of hunter motivation, hunting quality, hunter socialization, hunter ethics, crowding, and hunter population dynamics. He was one of the founding members of the Human Dimensions in Wildlife Study Group.
He teaches a course in Wildlife and Society, and has given seminars on human dimensions of wildlife. He has published widely in the human dimensions literature. He recently wrote the forward to Legendary Deer Camps by Rob Wegner. His most recent article (2004) Fire in the Sistine Chapel: How Wisconsin Responded to Chronic Wasting Disease published in Human Dimensions of Wildlife . Vol. 9, # 3, is a critique of the Wisconsin response.
Professor Heberlein divides his time between Wisconsin (Lodi, Cayuga, and Bayfield) where he hunts deer, grouse, pheasants, ducks, geese and turkeys and Stockholm Sweden where he hunts moose, roe deer and ripa.
