• Don’t assume other hunters have done their turkey ID homework or that they will pay as much attention as you.
• While hunting, never wear or carry anything red, white or blue, as even a small patch of one of these colors – like the collar of a white t-shirt – might be mistaken for the head of a gobbler by another hunter. Be thorough about this. Even a red apple, soda can or cigarette pack could trigger a tragedy.
• Don’t hide behind brush or other obstructions. Sit in the open, against a large tree or other backstop wide enough to protect you from a turkey’s eyes or an errant shot charge.
• If another hunter approaches, call out in a loud voice. Don’t wave, make a sudden movement or give a turkey call.
• Use only hen calls while hunting. Leave gobble calls at home.
• When you’ve bagged a gobbler, tote it in a blaze-orange bag or carrier, like a Sling-It!
